(Tilhill Forestry, Shropshire, October, 2017) – Hannah Clarke, 22, from Birmingham has won an award for being the top student on the Countryside and Environmental Management Course at Harper Adams University.
Hannah was presented with a specially carved wooden trophy in the shape of an acorn by Tilhill Forestry Regional Manager Iwan Williams along with £250.
As part of the company’s work to strengthen links with students, Tilhill Forestry presents awards to top performing forestry students at leading universities offering qualifications in Forestry. The company also runs a popular graduate placement scheme and a structured programme to grow the management skills of their staff.
Hannah said: “I chose to do the Forestry module of my course because I undertook my placement year with a timber/plant machinery merchants in Cornwall and had built up a knowledge of timber products and building technologies that I thought would assist my learning. I had also completed a feasibility report for a waste wood biomass burner onsite at the sawmill I worked at as part of my placement assessment. This definitely helped me to understand the module content which included timber renewables, construction and innovative products. The module was very enjoyable; to understand the potential of timber in helping to move towards greener construction and energy was exciting to learn about. The award is a lovely recognition of all of this.”
Jim Waterson MICFor., MRICS Principal Lecturer, Forestry and Forest Products added: “Hannah has achieved an excellent academic record throughout her studies. She is a well-motivated and hard-working individual and has shown a real interest in the environment and resource management. She graduates from Harper Adams with a 1st class honours degree in Countryside and Environmental Management. Her achievement in scoring the highest grade in the final year Sustainable Forestry and Forest Products module reflects her excellent engagement with forest sector studies and well-informed critical thinking. Hannah is now intending to travel to New Zealand, Australia and the USA.”
Tilhill Forestry’s Regional Manager Iwan Williams said: “It’s great to see students like Hannah excelling in their studies. Harper Adams is one of several universities who offer courses that include Forestry. Tilhill has a long association with Harper Adams; it’s an excellent university and many of our past and present employees have studied there.”
