Kent YouTuber Hits One Million Subscribers

3rd September 2021

A YouTuber from Kent has reached one million subscribers on his YouTube channel, CareerVidz.

Richard McMunn, who also has more than 800,000 followers on TikTok, started his YouTube channel back in 2011 to help job seekers from around the world find employment. The channel focuses on teaching people how to prepare for job interviews, complete application forms, write CVs, and prepare for employment psychometric tests.

Initially, the channel was slow to gain followers and Richard would post new videos every month or so. However, as the channel grew in popularity, Richard decided to dedicate more time to helping people prepare for job interviews and employment tests. The response was very positive and the followers started increasing rapidly.

Richard said: “In 2018 I decided to work on the channel full-time. At that point I had approximately 39,000 subscribers and my initial aim was to grow it to 100,000 subscribers.

By 2019, I had reached the 100,000 subscriber milestone but, in the back of my mind, I was wondering whether I would be able to grow it even further and reach one million. It was a huge task but, being quite a driven and self-motivated person, I knew I could do it if I persevered and put the work in.

“I decided to go for it and I made a promise to myself that I would commit to uploading one video a day. It was hard work, but the fact that more and more people from around the world were getting in touch to tell me they had passed their interviews drove me on even more. It was a fantastic feeling to be in a position where I could literally help thousands of people from around the world into employment. This gave me the desire to create and upload even more videos.

“Everything was going really well and the channel was growing until I started to feel quite unwell on Christmas day last year. I was sat eating my festive lunch when I felt really tired and I was coughing quite a lot. I booked myself a Covid test for the following day and unfortunately it came back positive.

“Despite feeling unwell I carried on making my videos, but my condition quickly deteriorated. I felt so unwell that I had to stop work, and seven days after testing positive for Covid I collapsed at home and had to call 999 for an Ambulance.

“I had never felt so unwell in all my life and when I arrived at the hospital my chest X-ray confirmed I had double pneumonia. I was given antibiotics and steroids and told I should make a full recovery.

“The YouTube channel certainly helped me to focus on something positive and, although my road to recovery has been a long one, I still get that same buzz when people contact me to say they have found employment after using the tutorials.

“I still personally reply to all the comments on the channel. When people ask me for advice on how to prepare for a specific job interview, I will either write down my thoughts or create a fresh video for them.”

Despite having Long Covid, Richard says the channel has helped him to stay positive and reaching the one million subscriber milestone was the best feeling he’d ever experience during his 16 years of being in business.

Prior to starting his CareerVidz YouTube channel, Richard was an author of several books on Amazon under the How2Become brand name. Richard also worked in the Royal Navy serving on HMS Invincible and as a firefighter for Kent Fire Rescue Service for nearly 17 years. He believes his time spent in the Fire Service helped him to develop important entrepreneurial skills that have enabled him to be successful on YouTube.

“Working for Kent Fire and Rescue Service was a fantastic experience. Because the service is forward-thinking, and it is run so well, I got to learn the importance of diversity, inclusiveness and working hard to achieve your goals in life. I am now able to pass on that experience and the information I have gained to job seekers who want to gain employment and progress in their careers.”
