Heathfield photographer’s portrait competition helps children with cancer

An award-winning Sussex photographer has come up with a novel way of raising money for a local cancer charity.

​

Heathfield-based Sarah Tate came up with the idea of holding a children’s portrait competition which, for a donation of just £10, gives every competitor a free photo shoot and a print. Sarah is aiming to raise as much money as possible with her initiative.

​

After the entry deadline in late April, judges from Children with Cancer Fund, which is based in Polegate, will pick the winning portraits in each of the three age groups.

​

Each age group winner will receive a certificate, a 30 inch canvas of their portrait and Drusilla’s tickets for a family of four.

​

Sarah said: “We’ve had around 15 children take part so far and the results have been amazing so I think the judging will be very difficult. There is still time to get booked and enter.

​

“My sister very sadly died last year from cancer and I wanted to do something to help others affected by this terrible disease.  I came across Children with Cancer and really admire the work they do. I thought that holding a children’s portrait competition would be a perfect way to remember my sister and help others.

​

“An added bonus is being able to bring some joy to the entrants and their families. A session with a professional photographer might be something people haven’t thought about doing or were maybe not able to afford. The competition allows children to experience what it’s like to take part in a photo shoot and they also end up with a photo they can treasure.”

​

Children with Cancer was formed in 1988. The organisation raises funds to enable children with cancer and their families to take breaks to places like the Isle of Wight.

​

A spokesperson for the charity added: “We’re delighted that Sarah has chosen to fundraise for us in this way – offering her skills in exchange for a small donation to our charity. Sarah is an amazing, award-winning photographer and we know entrants will really love the experience of spending time with her in the studio.”
